I read between 15-20 blogs on a consistent basis pertaining to a number of topics including internet entrepreneurship, real estate investing, personal finance, and social media. There are 6 real estate investing blogs that have had a major impact on my investing career in one way or another. I want to share those investing blogs with you. I will tell you what it is that I find positive about them in the arena of real estate investing. I have also asked each of them to share a thought for beginner real estate investors, but mature investors will find wisdom in their advice as well – I know I did.
*These blogs have been listed in reverse alphabetical order (to look after those that always got looked over in the 3rd grade). I like each of them equally for different reasons.
REI Tips, JP Moses
When I first started investing, I did a lot of internet research. I got bombarded by emails from gurus (I can’t blame anyone but myself, I signed up for them!) One day I stumbled upon JP’s site. It didn’t take me long to realize that he was genuine with his information and that he was going to give his honest opinion about other’s real estate investing educational products no matter what. He didn’t go along with what was popular, he did what was right. And for that I salute you Sir.
JP’s advice to beginner investors: “Approach your REI endeavors as a true business. Give yourself some time to grasp the fundamentals and to get your sea legs under you before you go whole hog and quit your job over the first $20k deal you do. There’s a million ways to skin the REI cat, and it’s up to you to see past the hype and find the one that truly suits your personality and style the best. When you do, put on blinders for a while, hunker down and make some money with one model that works for you. Be willing to invest in your education on an ongoing basis, but DON’T HAVE SOS (Shiny Object Syndrome)!”
Must Know Investing, Patrick Riddle
What drew me to Patrick was two things. One, he’s close to my age and young entrepreneurs excite me in general (we’re starting to get schooled by under 21 year olds in this digital age). Second, I liked that he was honest and didn’t try to hide anything. I watched a video where he explained how his business became huge and in the next breath he shared with viewers that he ran into a huge cash flow problem – he let us know why he made the mistakes he did and showed us how to avoid the same situations. No fluff – the truth! And for that I salute you Sir.
Patrick’s advice to beginner investors: “Ready or not, take massive action. Success lies on the far side of consistent determined action.”
Good Faith Investing, Shae Bynes
From my experience, Shae is a ball of joy and positivity. Her blog goes beyond the realm of real estate investing. Soon after following her blog, I realized that she was interested in people having success in life just as much as in the business of real estate. And for that I salute you M’am.
Shae’s advice to beginner investors: “The very first thing you want to do as an aspiring investor is figure out why in the world you want to be an investor. Knowing your “why” is a key part of ensuring that you’ll persevere despite the obstacles. Also remember that the best way to learn is by taking action. It’s all about forward relentless motion and the only way you’ll lose is if you quit.”
From Zero to Seven Figures, Justin McClelland
You want a real estate investor with some tech knowledge that’s willing to share it? Justin is your guy. I keep thinking that I’m pretty savvy when it comes to web stuff, but Justin, you never cease to amaze me. And for that, I salute you Sir.
Justin’s advice for beginner investors: “As far as advice…it would be to not worry about starting an LLC and finding an accountant and an attorney and all of those auxilary “power team” members before starting. As they say…ready-fire-aim.”
Flip This Wholesaler, Steph Davis
Steph had a big influence in the start of my real estate investing career as well as being one of the reasons why I started blogging about real estate. She’s real, she’s funny, and she doesn’t take BS — and I love it. I can remember sitting down and reading her archives for hours on end to follow her entire real estate investing career from the beginning. And for that inspiration, I salute you M’am.
Steph’s advice to beginner investors: “If you want to achieve success, you need to be 100% committed to it and willing to do whatever it takes to get there. Most people are not willing to keep going when the going gets tough (and it will get tough). The ones who are willing to keep pushing through the obstacles will be the ones who end up at the top.”
BiggerPockets, Joshua Dorkin
Joshua is the creator of Bigger Pockets, which in my humble opinion is the best all-inclusive real estate investing website on the web today. Both newbie and veteran investors alike can find useful information and make some great contacts. The Bigger Pockets blog has a host of real estate investing articles that come out each and every week. By the way, they just reached their 60,000th member – congrats, we salute you Sir!
Josh’s advice for beginner investors: “My advice for new investors is to slow it down and plan everything out. In the years that I’ve been running BiggerPockets, I’ve seen countless newbie (wanna-be) investors get excited and rush to do their first deal because they hear about some once-in-a-lifetime opportunity thanks to a guru, friend, or someone else. Most of those people end up losing their shirt because they don’t know what they are getting themselves into. Those investors that are methodical in planning and organizing their businesses have a much higher success rate. If you can’t get yourself to put a business plan together because you don’t know enough or because you just don’t have a strategy, you need to do a lot more reading, ask a lot more questions, and network with a lot more successful people in real estate. (on our site, of course)”

And there you have it folks — you’ve just heard personal advice from 6 of the best real estate investing blogs out there. While they may not have the exact same message for new investors (wow, wouldn’t that be boring) you can definitely take away great real estate investing concepts from each of their thoughts.

Where the heck is the RSS feed for the BiggerPockets blog? Can’t find that anywhere…
Hey Brooks,
I’m honored to be one of the 6 REI blogs that have made a major impact on your investing career.
That’s part of my “why” (as Shae mentioned)… to impact other investors and help them learn from my knowledge, experience, mistakes.
You have an excellent list here (as I’m a fan of a few of these blogs as well).
If I can ever help you with anything, let me know
~ Patrick
Matthew — it’s not the typical orange RSS square button that we’ve all come to love and recognize. But in the top right corner you can click the little blue rectangle (Readers by Feedburner) which will allow you to subscribe with your reader of choice.
P-Rid! Thanks for stopping on by!
Cool list Brooks. I’m honored to be on it. Funny thing is, my list is exactly the same, with the addition of your blog and a couple of other tech blogs. Cheers
That’s awesome! I guess great minds think alike
Good looking out, Brooks! I always appreciate the support for BiggerPockets. Of course, this is a great list, and all but 2 of the others have been regulars on the BiggerPockets Blog. Maybe Patrick and JP will join us one of these days.
Tell’em Josh! Maybe they’ll go figure out what they’ve been missing
Brooks, I’m honored to be on your list…and so glad that I can fire you up! That’s awesome
Thanks again and keep up the great work with your blogging. Really good stuff.
Shae! Thanks for the props — keep that positivity going for us all!
Thanks for the list. I have been fortunate enough to stumble onto a few of these blogs and planning on checking out the rest. It allows me to see a lot of information given in a lot of great ways which helps me create a better blog of my own.
My blog is unique in that we talk about investing in outer space real estate. It’s called flip this star. I figured since no one else was doing it On outer space real estate investing it would automatically make my log the number 1 outer space real estate blog in the universe.
In all seriousness all of these blogs are great and not just for newbies. I have done enough deals to take me out of the newbie category but am always learning from others which only makes me better (or kinda nerdy from reading to much?)
Steph is pretty funny and I try to keep a sense of humor on my site but I am totally boring compared to her.
Curtis Gabhart
The dude with a site that’s out of this world
Curtis, thanks for the comment Sir! I’ll be interested to read about how I can name planets and the possibility of buying the mineral rights to nearby passing comets.
Great List! I am just wondering why mine is not on it. Just kidding.
I get a lot of great ideas from the blogs listed here and wanted to contribute as well. Mine is a little different in that I am showing everyone what I am doing to build back up to 30 (mostly rehabs) a year.
By showing everyone what I am doing, it is getting me fired about the business again. That was much needed. I hope you’ll check it out.
Danny, thanks for the comment man! Got you on my radar man. I like what I see so far!
